Japanese castles in Busan (Korea)

Сообщение Joy » 02 окт 2014, 21:23

Dongsamdong Castle
東三洞倭城 / 동삼동왜성
Established: 1593
Comander(s): Mōri Terumoto
This castle was situated on the Eastern shore of Yeongdo island and could easily observe the comings & goings of shipping through the Eastern entrance of Busan harbour. Though the site remains undeveloped and neglected, nothing of significance remains.

Bakmungu Castle
迫門口倭城 / 박문구왜성
Established: 1593
Comander(s): Mōri Terumoto
This small castle protected the Western entrance to Busan harbour. The flat area of land where the castle once stood has recently seen some major building projects that have totally engulfed the former historical site

Jaseongdae Castle
子城台倭城 / 자성대왜성
Established: 1593
Comander(s): Mōri Hidemoto
It was at this very spot where Japanese forces, led by Sō Yoshihito of Tsushima, first engaged Korean troops. Following a Japanese victory, the Korean fortifications were remodeled to a more Japanese style with three enclosures. Upon the main Wajō of Busan's completion, it took on the role of a branch castle.
Today, the plateau of what was once the main enclosure remains along with two, Korean-style gates.

Busan Castle
釜山倭城 / 부산왜성
Established: 1592
Comander(s): Mōri Terumoto
It was this castle that acted as the headquarters of the invading forces for the entire duration of the campaign. It consisted of three fortified enclosures and successfully withstood a naval attack in September, 1592. Despite being the most important castle & one of the largest on Korean soil nothing more than mere fragments remain.

Gupo Castle
亀浦倭城 / 구포왜성
Established: 1593
Comander(s): Kobayakawa Takakage
Built as a branch castle to Gimhae Jukdo Wajō, the layout of the castle was quite complex. Each of the three defensive enclosures were made up of multiple stepped levels that turned it into a virtual deathtrap no matter how far into the maze-like walled interior you found yourself. It was built to control & monitor traffic along the Nakdong river.
Much of the castle's layout can still be discerned today thanks to the remain, large sections of stonework.

Dongnae Castle
東莱倭城 / 동래왜성
Established: 1593
Comander(s): Kikkawa Hiroie
Long before Hideyoshi's invasion and occupation of the 1590's, a Korean fortress had stood here. It served to protect its inhabitants from pirates coming from the Japanese archipelago. After being taken early on in the first invasion, it was rebuilt into a strong Japanese style fortress.Following the retreat of the Japanese invaders, the castle continued to be used by the Koreans.
Remaining today from the Wajō is a lengthy but crumbled stone wall.
